Discovering the Cotswolds: Top Three Hidden Village Gems
The Cotswolds region, a tapestry of picturesque landscapes, is undoubtedly dotted with numerous breathtaking spots. While frequent travelers to this area might be familiar with popular names such as Stow-on-the-Wold, Castle Combe, and Bourton-On-The-Water, our blog tends to veer off the beaten path, diving deep into the heart of the Cotswolds to uncover lesser-known jewels.
Let us take you on a quaint journey through the three hidden gems of the Cotswolds that resonate with charm and tranquility.
1. Stanton Village
Nestled at the convergence of Gloucestershire and Worcestershire, Stanton’s allure lies in its golden-hued stone cottages. Merely a stone’s throw away from Broadway, another Cotswolds marvel we’ll explore later, Stanton boasts a rich tapestry of history spanning over a millennium, evident from its ancient farming roots.
My personal connection with Stanton began with my very first Cotswold visit. It was from this village that I embarked on a scenic trail, an integral segment of The Cotswolds Way. For first-timers, the village’s thatched cottages are a must-see. And if you fancy a drink or a nibble, Stanton’s cozy local pub awaits your arrival.
2. Snowshill
Every memory of Snowshill evokes images of a serene row of houses with a historic church standing tall amidst them. Yet, it’s not merely its aesthetics that earned Snowshill a spot on our list; it’s the profound sense of peace that envelopes you here. It feels as if time gracefully slows, allowing moments of introspection and serenity. And while you’re there, the centrally located pub, right opposite the church, is hard to miss and worth a visit.
3. Bloxham
Had this post been penned a while ago, Bloxham might not have featured. Our recent evening sojourn here, however, introduced us to its cobbled lanes lined with iconic golden-stoned cottages. The pinnacle of our visit was St. Mary’s Church, boasting Oxfordshire’s tallest tower. Previous literature hailed it as “the grandest in the country,” a sentiment we found ourselves nodding in agreement with.
In our past writings, we’ve emphasized that the allure of these villages isn’t solely based on their popularity, visitor count, or entertainment quotient. It’s the intangible – the emotions they stir, the peace they bestow, and the rejuvenating experiences they offer.
